The Silent Mdina city

Good evening, all Games of Thrones fans, do you already recognize this place?

It is the city gate of the medieval Mdina city in Malta, which was represented in popular Games of Thrones series. Mdina, also called the “Silent city”, is the oldest city in Malta and probably the best example of the walled medieval city in Europe.

The majestic entrance through medieval gates takes you to the mysterious and a very calm and silent place. The silent status is taken seriously till these days. You will find signs warning you to be quite and respect residents of Mdina. Moreover, entrance with cars is forbidden. Only residents of Mdina are allowed to use their cars inside of the city.

Mdina is an open air museum. You will be fascinated by Norman and Baroque architectural heritage, which will bring you several centuries back like a time machine.

Pretty houses of the locals are no less charming. Main doors painted in bright colors, giant door knockers representing lion heads, dolphins and sea horses or mysterious creatures, lovely small balconies perfect for a morning cup of coffee and decorative flowering saplings makes this city a dream place to live.

Mdina has several great museums to visit: The Knights of Malta, National Museum of Natural History and Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, but as I said Mdina city is a museum under the open sky itself. For us, it was amazing enough just to get lost in the narrow, medieval streets, admire unique architecture and take plenty of photos.

I would recommend you to visit “Mdina Glass” shops. Here you will find huge variety of impressive glassware. Each of them is unique art work.  Maybe, you will find perfect gifts for your friends and relatives or maybe for yourself. And don’t worry, it won’t be a problem, if you think that these beauties are too big or too heavy for your luggage, or maybe you are afraid to smash them during your trip back home. These shops are offering a shipping of their production to all corners of the World. 😉

To make your tour in Mdina even more impressive and memorable, have a delicious dinner on the roof of the “Sharma” restaurant and take a glance at the breathtaking panorama of the city.

This place will offer you a very good service. The restaurant has a very nice terrace on the roof, where a beautiful panorama of the city opens up to you. Talking about food, it simply delicious. They have a lot of food options, portions of food are big ad filling and good prices match the quality of food. Moreover, they have a tasty surprise for all their clients. Plus, this place is suitable for vegetarians and vegans too. 🙂

Trust me, choose this place for your romantic dinner, you won’t regret. 🙂

Well, Mdina was my favorite Malta experience. Mysterious shadows in the narrow streets, lovely houses of the locals and calmness of this place left me amazed. I would like to come back to this city one day. For me Mdina was even more impressive than Valletta – a capital of Malta.

So, during your visit in Malta dedicate one evening to Mdina, you will never forget this place. 🙂

  1. I was unaware of the gate at Mdina being in Game of Thrones…as I’ve only seen a few episodes (I have no TV). And you got some VERY good shots of the town. I don’t think my photos came out as good as yours. This is a great post.
