The Vigeland Park

The Vigeland Park is very impressive spot of Oslo city, which can’t be skipped during your trip. It is the largest sculpture park in the World where all (200) sculptures are made by a single artist Gustav Vigeland. G. Vigeland also designed the layout and architecture of the park. Probably this park was one of the main projects of his life.

Sculptures of Vigeland Park are very unusual. For example, angry kid or some crazy man hitting off several babies are the most popular ones which are printed often on Oslo souvenirs as a symbols of the city.

Moreover, here you can visit Vigeland Museum which was also G. Vigelands home and art studio. This building was built by a City Council in Oslo with one statement that Vigeland will bequeath all his art works to the City Council and this place will become a museum after his death. Vigeland was concentrated on his art and lived quiet uneventful life rarely leaving his studio.

At present the museum has ~ 1,600 sculptures, ~420 woodcuts, ~12,000 drawings, in addition at the museum you can see his notebooks, letters, his huge library and photographs. Moreover, according to artists last wish his urn is held in a small cellular tower of his home (now The Vigeland Museum). This place shares a story of Vigelands life and gives visitors an opportunity to step into his home and work studio. Sadly, we did not visited it, because it was closed during that time.

So, while planing your visit in Vigeland park better visit it during the day even though it also looks impressive in the evening. However, it will be easier to explore and admire sculptures in a day light and dark park won’t scare you off from exploring all its corners (as I mentioned before it is huge!). Plus, Vigeland Museum is open 10-16 or 10-17 (it depends on a week day), so don’t miss your chance to visit it.
